Introduction

Every year, millions are captivated by the charm and allure of the United States' 50 vibrant and diverse states. However, certain states eclipse others in terms of capturing people's preference, prominence, and popularity. Driven by a myriad of factors, including quality of healthcare, economy, opportunity, natural environment, education, infrastructure and more, some states are seeing a greater influx of new residents than others. Judging by population growth data from 2022 to 2023, we can gauge the popularity of these states and discern interesting trends.

  • The top 5 states exhibiting the fastest growth in population are Florida (1.91%), Idaho (1.82%), South Carolina (1.72%), Texas (1.59%), and South Dakota (1.52%).
  • At the other end of the spectrum, New York (-0.91%), Illinois (-0.82%), and Louisiana (-0.8%) are witnessing a decline in population, implying less popularity among prospective residents.
  • Interestingly, most of the top states with the highest growth are concentrated in the South and the West, suggesting a broader regional trend. Meanwhile, states showing a decline mainly lie in the North and the West, indicating a different set of regional considerations.
  • Four states, namely, Vermont, Kansas, and Michigan registered a zero percent change in their respective populations, indicating a balance between in-migration and out-migration.
